Tiger Cub Scouts Pack 165 in Springfield was busy at the Carter House on the afternoon of Sunday, November 8, 2015 with a task they were determined to perform. Even though the weather wasn’t cooperating they had decided this was the day they were going to plant their kumquat tree in the back yard at the Carter House.
Thanks to Andy Turcotte for scouting out the area and picking out the spot before the boys gathered to plant the tree. By getting the tree planted it fulfilled the requirement in the “Backyard Jungle” module for them. Even though this was a “chore” for the boys it was reported that they had a lot of fun while they were in the back yard at the Carter House.
The Historic Carter House Society Inc. would like to thank Pack 165, Lindsey, and Andy Turcotte for selecting the Carter House to receive the tree. Also, thanks to Lindsey and Andy for coordinating this event for the boys. I know we’ll enjoy watching the tree grow and we are very proud that they were able to plant the tree at the Carter House. The rain was a benefit, helping it get established and ready to grow.
HCHS would like to encourage all the Scout troupes in the area to plan a trip to the Carter House for a tour. We have had a Boy Scout troupe and a Girl Scout troupe take a tour and both groups enjoyed the history and hearing how people lived back in the 1800’s. The more troupes we have tour the house the more we are fulfilling our Mission Statement:
The purpose of the HCHS is to foster appreciation of Carter Plantation’s unique history, to carry out historical research, preservation of the Carter House and Carter Plantation, education, and to provide the public with meaningful heritage experiences.
